Description: I have had a number of rare books in my day, but this may be one of the rarest. There is one other copy of this book for sale right now on ebay. Beyond that I can find no other copy of this book for sale in the world on any booksite at any price. Furthermore, a search of WorldCat shows only one copy of this book in existence in any library - that in the Harry Houdini Collection in the Library of Congress. Title: DEATH IN THE LIGHT OF THE HARMONIAL PHILOSOPHY by Mary F. Davis ( Mary was the wife of famous American spiritualist Andrew Jackson Davis.) Published by A. J. Davis & Company, Progressive Publishing House New York 1876. This is a complete original hardcover book. It is a very small book, measuring 7 1/4" x 5". It has only 29 pages plus 4 pages ads. As it goes with rare books, what makes it so valuable is to some degree its significance, but primarily its rarity. Also the exceptional condition of this particular copy is noteworthy. Harry Houdini spent much study of spiritualism, psychics and mediums, doing so to debunk their "craft." He was part of a committee that offered a cash prize to anyone who could demonstrate any supernatural abilities. That prize was never awarded. Houdini had a pact with his wife that after his death he would try to contact her. After vigilant efforts, Houdini's wife gave up that attempt after 10 years. Condition of this copy is superb. Nearly as crisp as the day it was issued. One flaw is a bookplate on the first blank page. And beyond that only the very slightest of wear and/or bumping at the extremities. A key addition to anyone who collects, studies or researches material on spiritualism, death, psychics, mediums or magic. HAPPY COLLECTING!
