Description: Rare AuthenticSouth Texas Tortugas Obsidian Projectile Point, Arrowhead, Dart South TexasPrehistoric Native American Artifact, Nueces River Watershed, Early Archaic toMiddle Archaic (3000 BC to 2000 BC), Neoglacial Glacial Period, Edward PlateauChert, Excellent Condition. The TortugasPoint is probably part of the continuum beginning with the Early Triangular,the Tortugas, the Anthon, and the Fresno Points. Tortugas and Anthon Points arethe most similar with the main difference being the smaller size of the AnthonPoint with the point being sharper and slightly lanceolate. The Early Triangular is also the most likethe Tortugas in appearance. The EarlyTriangular Point is most often more equilateral in its triangular appearanceand basal thinning makes this point much thinner at the base with the removalof longitudinal flakes. The obsidian is most likely from Central Mexico(Otumba Source) was the primary source prior to 1100 AD and later from primarysource from Malad Idaho, Obsidian (Volcanic Glass) was important trade forPaleo Indians in South Texas, Obsidian artifacts can be considered ceremonial.
