It was made in 1887 by the WHITING MANUFACTURING COMPANY and is fully hallmarked. WMC used Construction numbers to date their early pieces. These numbers were stamped on the pieces along with their Hallmark. The Construction #'s were used for dating purposes from 1880 to 1894. Construction #'s 2318-2648 were manufactured in 1887. This ruler is marked with Construction #2613 which falls within the range of numbers for the year 1887 Founded in Attleboro, Massachusetts, in 1866 by William Dean Whiting, who had already made a name for himself as a maker of sterling silver with Tifft & Whiting, the Whiting Manufacturing Company was one of the late 19th century’s premier producers of sterling silver flatware, hollowware, and other decorative objects such as snuff boxes.
