Description: Rare Antique Victorian Meriden silverplate basket. - Stunning design with ferns and birds around the edging and an ocean scene in the center, featuring a boat floating on the waves. A stag looks out on the scene from the trees. The detail is amazing! Ornate scrolled legs and hinged handle complement the central designs. - Stamped on base. Quadruple silver plate with Meriden lion symbol. Meriden Silver Plate Co. was founded in 1869 with factories based in Meriden, Connecticut. This particular mark was used during the 19th century. In 1898, Meriden Silver Plate Co. helped form the International Silver Co. and became one of its brands, though its mark ceased being used in the 1930s. Good condition. Silver plate is in excellent condition (there is one bit of wear to plate on the screws which hold the handle in place, showing through the gold base tone metal). The basket does have some bends and dents. This is evident in some dips to the sides of the edges of the basket, visible from the side. There is one dent in the edge (see close up). Overall it is a stunning piece with these flaws not detracting from its gorgeousness! I have given it a polish to bring out the shine of the silver, whilst leaving some of the original patina to create contrast. It could be buffed further if the buyer wishes. There is some light surface scratching typical of a silver item - these might fade further with continued polishing. Measurements: 9 3/4" x 9 1/4" x 4" (Height with handle standing 11")
