The image is rendered in black with a warm sepia yellow background. There are traces of a gold filigree border around the image and touches of gold highlighting on the rim. The dish has an elaborate leaf shaped form with piercings along the top edge. It is signed on the back, "Made in Austria Expressly for W.G. Brown & Co., Gloucester, Mass." It is a fine piece of historic Cape Ann grand hotel memorabilia, have some fun and bid! East Gloucester's sole early large resort-hotel complex was the Hawthorne Inn, originating on Wonson's Point in 1891 by enterprising hotel developer George O. Stacy, and later to become a massive, multibuilding establishment taking 450 to 500 or more guests in twenty-four separate units, mostly new built or converted cottages. The primary component was a Shingle-style edifice, with it's proliferation of verandas, porches, and angled window bays, to which were attached the less auspicious Manse and south wing containing bedrooms and public spaces. The prolific Gloucester contractor John W. Day, builder of other local hotels, was associated with the primary building projects. The individual structures possessed names recalling the life and writings of Nathaniel Hawthorne, Stacy's favorite author and the hotel's namesake – Seven Gables, Province House, Orchard Cottage, Wayside, Peabody, Endicott, Felton, Cherryfield, and Blythedale. In 1930, after Stacy's death, the ownership of Hawthorne Inn and Cottages transferred to Thomas White. Eight years later, on 10 February 1938, the hotel was visited by a devastating fire, believed to have been intentionally set and leading to the arrest of those held responsible. The business never fully recovered, though the hotel remained open until after World War II. Source: Bryant F.
