Description: Description This is a gorgeous antique Japanese bowl from the Meiji era, hand-painted depicting an erotic scene of a man and a woman. The man is clasping the woman in a very close embrace. Both are dressed-- in the loosest sense of the word-- in traditional Japanese clothing in shades of gray, white and black (the man), and pink with blue flowers (the woman). They're lying on a blue futon decorated with gingko leaves. The man's hair is in a chonmage topknot, probably indicating his status as a samurai. The woman's hair is in a tōrōbin or 'lantern locks' style. It's unusual to find bowls with this subject from the era, especially with such fine painting-- shunga woodblock prints were much more common. The bowl is set on a high base, and signed in blue on the bottom with 江上製, 'made by Egami,' which likely refers to Kumanosuke Egami (1837-1916) or possibly his son Kumaichi. He founded the Egami kiln in Arita in 1876. The art in the bowl is by an unknown ukiyo-e artist. For additional pictures, please send me a message. Size Approximately 6 3/4" across the bowl; 1.5" tall. Condition The rim of the bowl appears to have been damaged and professionally repaired at some point. I can't tell the extent of the damage but I don't think it's very large. The overpainting has begun to yellow due to age. I might suggest the buyer have a professional re-do the repair.
