Description: Antique Miniature Civil War Mapsubmitted byGen. George StonemantoMaj. Gen. W.T. Sherman during his "March to the Sea" about eight miles from Atlanta July 1864(it was published between 1891-1895) Gen. Stoneman was noted for the longest cavalry raid in the war and his attempt to free Union prisoners in Andersonville. During his Atlanta campaign, Sherman sent a detachment of Cavalry under General George Stoneman to destroy General John B. Hood’s supply lines and communications between Macon and Atlanta. As part of this mission, Sherman consented to allow Stoneman to proceed to Andersonville Prison (Camp Sumter) and liberate the Union prisoners of war incarcerated there.Stoneman was not successful in liberating the Union prisoners, in fact, he was captured along with about 700 of his force and held captive until he was exchanged a couple of months later. This was the only serious attempt that Sherman made to free the prisoners at Andersonville during his Atlanta campaign. This map is original, antique map, No.5 (not reproductions) and is a section (3.8" x 3.7" including 1.1" right side margin) from a folio page of maps from the Atlas to Accompany the Official Records of the Union and Confederate Armies Commissioned by Resolution of Congress May 19, 1864,in accordance to serve as the official historical record of the war.(It was published between 1891-1895) The atlas from which this map was taken still remains the definitive source of Civil War information available. The Atlas was never publicly sold but exclusively distributed to federal depositories, universities, museums and various public institutions until they were withdrawn from these institutions and entered the public domain years later. Map image: 2.7" x 3.7" The map comes from the larger folio Plate XLV (45). A great little piece of American Civil War history.
