Peters Extremely Rare, early to mid century 1900’s, gold tone pin with green enamel face and letters. Produced by the now defunct (1922-1952), H. W. Peters Jewelery Company of Boston Massachusetts. Markings on back include the Makers Mark as well as stamped letters; “X” which could be the Greek letter for “Xi” Chapter as well as the intials “WOH”. These pins are extremely rare and hard to find due to the fact that the majority of them, including the one you see here, were produced as gold plated and not solid gold which prompted many to be discarded over the years for their low perceived gold value. But for a young black woman working her way through college, more than likely with little money or help, this would of made a world of sense, that the chapter pledge pins would have had to be relatively inexpensive to stay affordable for an “on line” young pledge or small chapter overseeing new pledges. There was also a practice during this period of chapters purchasing pins and distributing them to Ivies during pledge period and then having them returned to the chapter to be used for the next line of hopeful initiates. “But”, against the rules, some would not be returned and that is probably how this pin survived all these generations later. As many would agree, the eternal value of this pin goes far beyond its metal content. This relic of Sorority legacy is an heirloom treasure that should be cherished for the piece of history that it is! Our hope is that it finds a safe forever home with a well accomplished member, Sorority Archivist or proud undergrad chapter! (Xi Chapter members will have preference in any offers made).
