Description: GERMAN NOTGELD expressing ANTI-WAR SENTIMENT That's the remarkable anti-Imperialist message on this currency which only 3 weeks earlier would have been unheard of...and considered treason! These notes were issued on December 1, 1918 not 3 weeks after Germany's WW1 surrender. For the first time, German citizens could freely express their sentiments about the war, and that's just what the Chamber of Commerce of the town of Oldenburg did. Please look closely at the vignettes flanking the head of Mercury. On the left, an exhausted and defeated old knight (symbolizing German militarism, nationalism, imperialism etc.) and a crippled snake-headed Medusa (symbolizing fear, madness, terror, etc.) slink away, stage left. On the right a noble youth wearing flowers in his hair (postwar new beginning) hands a blacksmith (the German everyman) the tools he will need to build a new democratic Germany. The ornate reverse has a border of leaves surrounding the denomination and Mercury's shield. Scarce and poignant postwar Chamber of Commerce currency, which is far less common than Notgeld issued after the war and even Kriegsgeld issued during the war.
