The deposed and spurned Catholic monarch James II had fled to Ireland in hopes of rallying an army and retaking the crown. His hopes were dashed, however, after his crushing defeat at the Battle of the Boyne. King William III and Queen Mary II's armies squashed James's ramshackle Jacobite forces. He fled to France, although warfare continued between the Irish and English. His defeat secured Protestant ascendency to the crown of Ireland, England, and Scotland.
