Description: This is a wonderful mid 19th century carte de visite of Moses Austin Cartland (Quaker abolitionist and editor). Moses Austin Cartland 1805-1863 played a major role in The Underground Railtoad and was influential in the escape of Oliver Gilbert to New York. He was the second cousin and confidant to John Greenleaf Whittier. He founded Clinton Grove Academy which was the 1st Quaker Seminary in New Hampshire. This image was part of a photo album purchased from a local estate in Weare NH. I have been unable to find another image of Cartland on the internet. The auction is for the Image only but image 3 shows the cdv in the original album.
