Description: This is a custom made, one of a kind piece of Corning 7740 Pyrex low expansion borosilicate glass. I witnessed this piece being made in 1974 at the Corning glassworks Parkersburg West Virginia factory. The factory is no longer in existence. The plant produced borosilicate glass tubing of various diameters, and some glass laboratory ware formed from tubing stock. This piece was made from a continuous piece of 7 inch diameter Pyrex glass tubing. Using a glass lathe, an open end of cylinder of this glass was remelted, and the end rolled in and shaped to form a flat bottom by hand. Mouth air pressure from a hose was applied to the inside of the glass cylinder while carbon tools were applied to the exterior to shape the bottom. Then the piece was turned over in the lathe, and the top end rolled in to make a lip about 5/8 inches wide, and fire polished. Code 7740 PYREX® borosilicate glass is the most widely known of Corning’s family of low expansion Type 1, Class A borosilicate glasses (ASTM E438 Standard Specification for Glasses in Laboratory Apparatus). It comes closest to being the ideal glass for most laboratory applications. It will withstand nearly all temperatures used in normal laboratory use. It is highly resistant to chemical attack. Its low coefficient of expansion allows it to be manufactured with relatively heavy walls giving it mechanical strength, while retaining reasonable heat resistance.
