Upper left he is seen at his drawing board in the 1940s, when his creation was already internationally famous; upper right he is seen with some disbelievers who gave him a lie-detector test (he passed). Ripley's world included the famous (Shirley Temple, lower left; H.G. Wells, lower right) and the obscure as he toured the world seeking out the startling and amusing. (His luggage, in the center photo, displays labels from some of the more than 70 countries to which his insatiable curiosity took him.)
