Description: Note: Please study the images carefully to determine the condition of this vintage photograph, as it may not be in perfect condition. It may contain wrinkles, cracks, and possibly even tears due to its age and how it was handled before it got to us. This is an original press photo. Totem Pole Lane-These Indian Totem poles have been collected from nearby Indian villages and were planted a few years ago in the Indian village of Saxman, a few miles by road outside of Ketchikan, Alaska. Some of them are replicas reconstructed by Indians under the supervision of the Forest Service; the originals having been put in museums. In the foreground are Guy and Betty Poorman of Ketchikan. On the high pedestal is a recognizable totem of Abe Lincoln. Indians honored Abe because the United States annexation of Alaska brought them under the Emancipation Proclamation, freeing many from slavery of other Indian tribes. As Abe's photograph which they copied in wood was cropped off at the knees, they naturally assumed that was the length of his legs, and carved him accordingly. The original carving is still in the Territorial Museum at Juneau. Alaska Visitors Association Photo by Bob and Ira Spring-Alaska, Description and Travel.Photo measures 8.25 x 10inches.
