Press Photo Chief of Naval operations Arleigh Albert Burke - hcm01581 This is an original press photo. Arleigh Albert Burke - Chief of Naval Operations. In February, 1943 he assumed duty as Commander, Destroyer Division 43 and on May 31, was transferred to duty as Commander, Destroyer Division 44. In August, 1943 he became Commander, Destroyer Squadron 12, and in September of that year, was designated Commander, Destroyer Squadron 23. His squadron, known as "Little Beavers," covered the initial landings on Bougainville in November, 1943, under his command, and participated in twenty-two separate engagements during the period November 1, 1943 to February 23, 1944, being credited with the destruction of one Japanese cruise nine destroyers, one submarine, one auxiliary vessel, one coastal destroyer minelayer, one large cargo vessel, four barges, and approximately thirty enemy aircraft. In July, 1948 he assumedcommand of the USS Huntington, commanding the vessel until December of that year, when he reported to the Office of the Chief of Naval Operations, Navy Department, as Assistant Chief of Naval Operations, (Organizational Research and Policy Division). On January 18, 1950 he assumed duty as Navy Secretary, Research and Development Board, Washington, D.C. In September of the same year he became Deputy Chief of Staff to Commander, United States Naval Forces, Far East, and continued to serve as such until May, 1951 when he assumed command of Cruiser Division FIVE. Between May and September, 1951 he served as a member of the Military Armistice Commission, Commander Naval Forces, Far East. In December, 1951 he reported for duty in the Office of the Chief of Naval Operations, and from February, 1952 served as Director of the Strategic Plans Division, Naval Operations. On April 13, 1954 he became Commander Cruiser Division SIX, and on January 20, 1955 reported as Commander Destroyer Force, United States Atlantic Fleet. His nomination by the President to the Chief of Naval Operations was confirmed by the Senate on June 6, 1955. In addition to the Navy Cross, the Distinguished Service Medal with Gold Star, the Legion of Merit with Gold Star, the Silver Star Medal; the Commendation Ribbon, the Purple Heart Medal (for wounds received while serving aboard the USS Conway during July, 1943); the Presidential Unit Citation Ribbon with three stars, and the Navy Unit Commendation Ribbon, Rear Admiral Burke is entitled to the American Defense Service Medal, Fleet Clasp; the Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal with two silver stars and two bronze stars (twelve engagements), the American Campaign Medal; the World War II Victory Medal; Navy Occupation Service Medal, Europe Clasp; National Defense Service Medal; the Korean Service Medal, United Nations Service Medal; and the Philippine Liberation Ribbon. He has also been awarded the Ul Chi Medal and the Presidential Unit Citation from the Republic of Korea. His official address is Boulder, Colorado. Admiral Burke is a member of the American Chemical Society; the American Institute of Chemical Engineers; and Iota Alpha, honorary fraternity for Chemical Engineers. Photo measures 8 x 10.25 inches.
