Description: I'm Jim Camp, owner/operator of the synaesthesia press. I'm a letterpress printer. I publish books and broadsides in a limited edition run. And, I'm a bookseller. I've been collecting books for over 30 years, and most of what I'm offering here I've held for at least 20+ years -- some longer. It's time these titles found a new home. Offering: Presenting Bettie Page At Home & Presenting Bettie Page Outdoors. NY: Burmel and Modern Age, ND (mid-50's). A two-book lot: Presenting Bettie Page At Home. NY: Burmel Publishing Co., ND, and Presenting Bettie Page Outdoors. NY: Modern Age Publications, ND. (Both books probably published 1957-59, and both books published by Lenny Burtman, who was now publishing under various imprints while under investigation for violating obscenity laws.)Both books Good+ in stapled, glossy pictorial wraps as published. Presenting Bettie Page At Home much brighter than usually found, but some mild rubbing / shelf wear. Presenting Bettie Page Outdoors again much better than usually found, but there's a price stamp remnant on cover as well as the same general shelf wear. Also an almost imperceptible two-hole puncture where a previous bookseller stapled the book shut to prevent those oh-so-pesky browsers. Again, both books much better than usually found.Burmel Publishing Co., established in New York City during the 1950s, was a notable entity in the niche market of fetish and alternative lifestyle publications. Founded by Leonard "Lenny" Burtman, a prominent figure in the fetish photography scene, the company specialized in producing magazines and booklets that explored themes of fetish fashion, female dominance, and bondage fantasies. Key publications included Exotique and Exotique Correspondence Digest.During its operation, Burmel Publishing faced significant legal challenges. In the late 1950s, Burtman (as well as Bettie's other employer, Irving Klaw and his company Movie Star News) came under intense scrutiny from the U.S. Postal Inspection Service and local law enforcement, for violating obscenity laws / the Comstock Act. This led to the arrest of Leonard Burtman, confiscation of materials, and eventual cessation of Exotique magazine in 1959. These same legal challenges also significantly impacted Klaw's career as well, contributing to the (apparent) destruction of a substantial portion of his photographic archives. It also drove Bettie into retirement.Remember to come back regularly to check my listings, and don't forget to look over in my store for more, good stuff!
