While the material is still aluminum alloy, they have undergone a series of processing steps specifically intended to promote adhesion and limit the need for cleaning. These stubs are packaged in tubes of 10 and are currently available in the common 20mm size. Research papers are available that illustrate the improved adhesion characteristic that results from sandblasting. The sandblasting process roughens the stub face, and results in a better surface for the epoxy to fill. However, this is a 'dirty' process that leaves dust on the stub. To remove this dust, the stubs then undergo an anodizing process. This removes all impurities and thickens and toughens the oxide layer for improved durability. It also makes the stub more corrosion and weather resistant. The results of these processing steps is a stub that only adheres better when bonded to test surfaces with fewer glue failures, but in most cases the stubs will require cleaning before use.
