Description: This Powell, Bishop, & Stonier Oriental ivory and gold encrusted pitcher boasts an intricate overlay of a green and gold foliate motif. The bottom is marked with initials "P.B.S", Oriental Ivory mark, and registration number. Powell, Bishop, & Stonier is an earthenware and China manufacturer located in Stoke-on-Trent, England. Much of their production was exported, with over one million different items sent to New York alone in 1851. They are reported to have exhibited at the 1851 Great Exhibition. Marks on their ware incorporate the name of the firm or their initials. In 1876, Powell and Bishop exhibited at the Philadelphia Exhibition. In 1880, Powell, Bishop, and Stonier registered a new trademark to accompany their ivory or cream colored earthenware.
