Cassius Marcellus Coolidge (1844–1934) was an American artist best known for his iconic "Dogs Playing Poker" series. His depictions of anthropomorphized dogs engaged in human activities—especially sitting around poker tables smoking cigars and playing cards—became a classic part of American pop culture. Coolidge's style combined humor and a unique, playful approach, which made his works popular in advertising and among art collectors. Coolidge started his career with various odd jobs, including sign painting and newspaper cartooning, before settling into his artistic niche. Although he was largely self-taught, his lighthearted, accessible art style resonated with audiences, especially as his work was reproduced in advertisements for companies such as Brown & Bigelow in the early 1900s.
