You may recall the story of how Robin Hood first met Little John. One day Robin was walking through Sherwood Forest, where he lived with his band of Merry Men to escape from the cruel Prince John and his henchman the Sheriff of Nottingham. (Robin and his men helped the poor by taking from rich travelers, while they waited for the rightful king, King Richard the Lion-hearted, to return from the Crusades and oust Prince John.) Robin came to a log bridge across a small river. At exactly the same time, a large stranger approached the bridge from the other side. Neither man would let the other cross over first. So they agreed to have a friendly fight with quarter staffs to see who would go over first. They fought long and hard, both being excellent fighters. Finally, the tall stranger knocked Robin Hood off the bridge into the river. But instead of getting mad, Robin congratulated the sturdy stranger on his skill. Robin invited the stranger to join his band of merry men. The stranger, impressed by Robin's skill and character, agreed. Robin then called his men by blowing his horn.When they arrived, they asked the stranger his name. "John Little", the stranger replied. The merry men laughed because the man was very big and not little at all. They said as a joke that the man should be called "Little John" from that day on.
