Description: On July 15, 1983, Piedmont inaugurated operations at its new Baltimore hub operating out of the Baltimore-Washington International Airport. As part of the inaugural, nonstop service was provided to twelve points previously served by Piedmont and two new cities — Hartford, Connecticut / Springfield, Massachusetts and Providence, Rhode Island. No cachet was provided for the inaugural mail. This cover was one of the few pieces of mail carried on the inaugural Piedmont Airlines flight from Baltimore, Maryland to Providence, Rhode Island (where it was backstamped) and is listed in the First Flights by United States Airlines (FFUS) Section of the American Air Mail Catalogue as PI-D73N.The Baltimore Postmaster autographed the cover. The USAir (later renamed USAirways) purchase of Piedmont Airlines was approved by the Department of Transportation. The sale was completed in October 1987. The two airlines operated separately until August 5, 1989, when all operations and schedules were integrated. Piedmont ceased to exist on August 5. US Airways was a major American airline that ceased to operate independently when the Federal Aviation Administration granted a single operating certificate for US Airways and American Airlines on April 8, 2015.
