Phred Instruments Reprise - Flame Maple, 2023 (Excellent Condition)

Description: This is a Phred Instruments Reprise that I received in August 2023. It is constructed with a flame maple top, spruce back, mahogany sides, flame maple neck, and ebony fingerboard. The pickups are Seymour Duncan '59s; hardware includes a bone nut, brass saddles, hardwood control knobs, and USA built and installed electronics. If you are interested in this guitar, then I imagine you're familiar with the construction and operation of Languedoc-style guitars, so I won't detail all that in this description (i.e., I'm sure you already know we are talking about a floating bridge, hand-carved parallel-braced top, etc.).After purchasing, I had the guitar professionally set up and PLEK'd by Danny Shoemaker of Straight Frets - one of the best guitar techs here in Austin. The smooth low action and excellent intonation that a good setup brings to this guitar are hard to beat.I've had this guitar for nearly a year, and I adore it. I remember how gorgeous it looked when I first took it out of the box, and what I thought when I picked it up and began noodling over a scale or two: first I was stunned by how beautiful the guitar is, then by the way such a masterfully built instrument felt in my hands, and finally by the thrill of being able to bring music out of such a sophisticated instrument. This guitar itself is a work of art, and when you play it, it helps you find every bit of artistry that you have inside of you. I know Languedoc is the original artist, but God bless Freddy Rose for making a guitar like this accessible to players at an attainable price. The guitar is a joy to play whether plugged in or not. Acoustically, it has a breathy, woody tone, which makes individual notes sound rich and harmonies sound huge and many-layered. Another thing, which I was surprised by when I started playing the guitar, is how important it is that the guitar is acoustically LOUD. I knew that a parallel-braced spruce/maple archtop would be pretty loud acoustically, but I didn't realize just how loud it would be - it's loud enough that you can comfortably play along with someone using a dreadnaught and be heard. Most importantly, the excellent acoustic volume allows the beauty of the guitar's tone to shine even when you are just practicing or writing or dicking around unplugged. With this guitar, you can really focus on things like dynamics and articulation even when you're just messing around with scales at 2 AM while your roommates are asleep in the other room. Not to mention that, if you're like me, having a guitar that is so sensitive and responsive even in an acoustic practice setting will do wonders for your technique. It's harder to say how it sounds electrically, since so much depends on your amp and your pedalboard, not to mention your taste. If you're interested in this listing, though, I imagine you're looking for Trey Anastasio tones, and believe me, they are attainable. The Seymour Duncan '59s are awesome pickups, hot but not too hot, that sound incredible through my Blues Deluxe. At high gain, the volume knob on the guitar basically becomes the feedback knob, and you can easily go from no feedback to mild, woody enrichment of the sound to brain-shattering, feedback-drenched, infinite sustain notes just like Trey does. The guitar does so much of the work in producing the tone that, to my surprise, I found myself turning my pedals off most of the time. The pickup selector, volume and tone knobs, and coil-tapping options gave me such a wide range of sounds through a decent tube amp that I didn't feel the need to use much else. But that's me, and if you're looking for different tones, all I can say is that this guitar is more than capable of anything from super clean to super heavy, and that you're going to have a lot of fun figuring out how to get the sound you want.So after waxing lyrical about the guitar so much, why am I selling it? Unfortunately, I need the money. I hate to get rid of such a beautiful instrument that I've been so happy with, but last year I was at a place in life where I could afford to upgrade to a premium guitar, and now I'm at a place in life where I should probably go back to a Squire. I'm asking $3,500 for the guitar, or $1,000 over the retail price. I hate to do that, but I think it's fair for the following reasons:1) The guitar has already been set up and PLEK'd by a highly-regarded, professional tech2) I will ship the guitar for free...and, most importantly3) If you buy this guitar new from Phred, you will wait years to receive it. I personally waited two years. I will ship you this guitar tomorrow.I personally feel like the $2500 price Phred asks makes these incredible guitars a steal, and I'm offering to make this guitar yours with an even better setup, free shipping, and no years-long wait.Message me if you have any questions. I can't wait for this incredible guitar to be in the hands of a new player.
