Also often showcasing his calibre as a composer, he was a master of expressing his true emotions through song and was most well-known for the classic track "Hit the Road Jack", which later became a hit for Ray Charles's in 1961 and prompted Ray to sign Mayfield to his record company 'Tangerine Records' as a songwriter later that year.
