Pennsylvania German Fraktur and Color Drawings 1969

Description: Normal 0 false false false EN-US X-NONE X-NONE Notable Features: About the Book:When Pennsylvania German Fraktur was first discovered, in the last decade of the 19th Century, it was described as "the art of Fractur or illuminative writing" and a lineage was drawn up which stretched from medieval cloister to backwoods schoolhouse in Pennsylvania. As Henry C. Mercer, the discoverer, put it in 1897, "with strange sensations, we rescue from the Pennsylvania garret evidence indisputable of the passing away in the New World of one of the fairest arts of the cloister, which, meeting its death-blow at the invention of printing, crossed the Atlantic to linger among the pious descendants of the German reformers until recent years."When the first public exhibit of fraktur was held in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, in 1902, Professor Joseph Henry Dubbs of Franklin and Marshall College described the pieces as "rustic art," the American analogue to Europe's "peasant art" (Bauernkunst).Research since then has alternated between these emphases, or combined them. The two principal authorities on fraktur today—Donald A. Shelley and John Joseph Stoudt—have in differing ways expanded both the Mercer and Dubbs approaches. Shelley's outstanding contribution is his filling in of the lineage of the technique of fraktur, highlighting its 16th and 17th Century roots in Europe, as well as his careful analysis of the sectarian "schools" of fraktur. Stoudt's contribution has been to work at the historical, theological, and literary lineage of the symbolism of fraktur. Both have helped us to understand the place of fraktur in the total Pennsylvania German culture, which is the focus of the present exhibition.About the Author/Editor: Condition:There is discoloration on the front and the back.
