Description: Welcome to my listing for a worn but collectible copy of Paul Bowles's The Sheltering Sky. This is the 1st US hardcover edition of this book, published in 1949 by New Directions, and states on both copyright page and dustjacket that it is the 5th printing. although it does not explicitly state edition or printing. The book is a solid reading copy; there is a bookplate, and three different enthusiastic owner signatures, in the prefatory pages (see Photos 7, 8, and 9), but the text pages are undamaged and unmarked. The binding is solid and square with only a trace of wear, with light dust-soiling on the upper edge of the pageblock. The original dustjacket is present, but in poor condition, torn in several places (the spine strip is completely detached, see Photo 10) and with age-yellowed tape all around its edges. This book is not ex-library and not a facsimile copy.
