Patricia Collinge played the role of Cecily Cardew. Reginald Owen was also a member of the cast. A satire of Victorian social hypocrisy, the witty play is considered Wilde’s greatest dramatic achievement. Setting: Algernon Moncrieff's rooms in Half-Moon Street, London. The garden at the Manor House. Jack Worthing is a fashionable young man who lives in the country with his ward, Cecily Cardew. He has invented a rakish brother named Ernest whose supposed exploits give Jack an excuse to travel to London periodically to rescue him. PATRICIA COLLINGE (1892–1974) was an Irish-American actress and writer. She became a celebrated theatrical star of many classic plays by George Bernard Shaw, Henrik Ibsen, J.M. Barrie and others. From 1947 to 1948, she starred as Lavinia Penniman in 'The Heiress' at the Biltmore Theatre, directed by Jed Harris. The play ran for 410 performances. She also appeared as Emma Newton in Shadow of a Doubt (1943). Though uncredited, Patricia wrote some of the dialogue for this film, as well as for Lifeboat (1944), in which she did not appear as an actress. She was best known for her stage appearances, as well as her roles in the films The Little Foxes (1941) and Shadow of a Doubt (1943). She was nominated for an Academy Award as Best Supporting Actress and won a NBR Award for her performance as the endearing, disillusioned Aunt Birdie in The Little Foxes.
