"Pansy" was the childhood nickname and the "nom de plume" of Mrs. G. R. Alden. She was born in 1841 as Isabella MacDonald to a very moral, abolitionist family in Rochester, New York. As a small child, she once picked the entire crop of her mother's prized pansies as a present for her. After this episode, she received the nickname "Pansy" from her father. She began writing as a child and had her first story printed when she was only 10 years old. Pansy attended the Seneca Collegiate Institute (in Ovid, New York) and the Young Ladies' Institute (in Auburn, New York). In 1866, she married the Reverend Gustavus Rossenberg Alden. Over a period of more than 60 years, she published more than 100 books. She also was the editor of a juvenile periodical, The Pansy, between 1874 and 1896. Both her husband and her only child (a son, Raymond) died in 1924. Subsequently, she lived with her daughter-in-law in Palo Alto, California. She died in 1930, while working on an autobiography, Memories of Yesterday, which was completed by her niece, Grace Livingston Hill, herself an accomplished writer. D. Lothrop and Company was founded in 1868 by Daniel Lothrop (1831 - 1892). He had been born and raised in New Hampshire. By age 17, he was in business, running a drug store that he also stocked with books. In 1850, he bought a dedicated book store in Dover, New Hampshire, that became the largest in the state. He started his publishing company with the philosophy "never to publish a work simply sensational, no matter what chances of money it has in it, and to publish books that will make true, steadfast growth in right living - not alone right thinking, but right living."
