Description: Vasco Nunez de Balboa was a Spanish conquistador who fled Hispaniola (now Haiti and the Dominican Republic) to avoid debt charges in 1510, stowed away on a vessel bound for Darien (in present-day Columbia), defeated several indigenous tribes (seizing their gold), then sailed and marched west, reaching the Pacific Ocean, which he claimed for Spain in 1513—thus becoming the European discoverer of that ocean. As a result of several political maneuvers to seize full colonial powers along the way, he was arrested, tried for treason, convicted, and beheaded in Panama in 1519. The location of his remains is unknown.
