Description: Rare 1948 incoming mail to siege era Jerusalem: 2-14 May 1948 interim period undated commercial cover sent from law firm in TEL AVIV to Government department in JERUSALEM, franked 10m per period domestic letter rate using interim stamp & tied by single strike of one of the city branch post office's postmark (not of the Head Post Office which was in violet). In this period civilian access to Jerusalem was very limited, with the city being under siege conditions and without regular postal contact from outside. The cover was likely held at Tel Aviv until the first regularly scheduled mail convoys reached Jerusalem from 18 June onwards. Incoming convoy mail into Jerusalem is very rare, described in JSPS p.188 as being "only a handful of such letters [which have] survived to date, therefore they are very rare", and although per JSPS (ibid) "All of the examples [of incoming convoy mail] recorded to date are from Tel Aviv", a small number of Jerusalem addressed period covers from outside Tel Aviv have surfaced since JSPS was published in 2004.
