The popularity of handbells spread rapidly through New England in the early 20th century, even though virtually all bells had to be imported from England. In 1937, several handbell enthusiasts met at Margaret’s home and formed the New England Guild of English Handbell Ringers (NEGEHR). By the early 1950’s, handbell ringing was scattered across the United States. The American Guild of English Handbell Ringers (AGEHR) was formed at the same time. In 2010, while keeping the proud tradition of AGEHR, the organization began doing business as Handbell Musicians of America. Handbell Musicians of America has grown into a vibrant organization and continues its mission of advancing the musical art of handbell/handchime ringing through education, community, and communication.
