Shortly after, the team composed of Meserve, Eriksson as well as Corporal Clark, First Class Hatcher and Specialist Brown nicknamed "Brownie", went to an Allied village. While the time is resting, Brownie falls under the bullets of the Vietnamese. Shortly after returning to base camp, Meserve tells his soldiers of Brownie's death, which saddens Eriksson and Hatcher but makes Clark drunk with rage and vengeance. While they were refused permission to go out into town given that the Viet Công were also there, Meserve spoke of obtaining a wife in one way or another.
