Description: John Gunn's Orkney The Magnetic North is well known as an early, easily readable, history and topogrpahy of Orkney. This is a particularly interesting edition. It is the the 1st issue of the 1st edition published by Nelson in 1932, complete with tipped in errata sheet, which informs reader's that the opening of the Air Mail and Passenger Service to Orkney is to be delayed to 1933. Also of great interest, and extremely rare, is the double sided dust jacket, The verso being the dust jacket printed by TC & EC Jack for their edition of Nicholas Nickleby. Nelson took over Jack in 1915, so this unused dust jacket had been kept in their paper store for 17 years, and was then revered and reprinted for use as the dust jacket of The Magnetic North.
