Description: We bought this from the artist at one of Florida's high end winter juried art shows in the 90s or early 2000s. Joe Beck is a noted watercolor artist, now based in Texas where her gallery is located, but who has taught watercolor workshops all over the southern states. This one is titled "Basket Lady Mt. Pleasant SC" and depicts one of the several roadside basket makers in that community just outside of Charleston. "Gullah" Baskets have been made for a few hundred years in that vicinity, and they are now considered an art form bringing quite high prices. Neta and I made a buying trip there in the 70s, and visited with Mary Jane Bennett, one of the more famous makers of this style of basket, in her home. As with the African techniques on which these baskets are descended, the materials are gathered by hand in the swamps and pine woods, and Mary Jane described not only that process but the prayers that protect her from the snakes. This picture captures the industry and artistry of those who carry on this tradition, now with a reasonably high demand and profit, I hope. The picture measures 39x32" in a wood frame. Matted and well presented.
