Description: This WW2 Irvin flying jacket was made by 'Links' before the Second World War. Based on the zips, it's most likely made in 1939-41. 'Links' was a prolific manufacturer of Irvin flying jackets throughout the war, but early examples like this one are rare to find!This jacket is typical of those worn during the early stages of the Second World War by both Fighter and Bomber Command. The rear of the jacket features a single seam, which is the most apparent detail of an early war jacket. The collar retains its leather tab, and both of the corresponding metal rings are also present on the underside. A black elasticated collar strap can be found at the rear of the collar, which is a fabulous original feature as these are often missing on jackets today. The original waist belt is also still present and is the large, chromium-plated type employed by 'Links' on these early jackets. This is a notable feature of this manufacturer as it is very different in design from those used by other makers.The main zip is not an original to the jacket and has been replaced at Aero, Scotland. However, both sleeve zips are the original D.O.T examples, which bear the Air Ministry AM and crown marking to one side, the inside zip is the original lightening zip. The main zip and one sleeve zip retain their factory-fitted leather pull tabs, which is a testament to the excellent condition and originality of this jacket.Inside the jacket, there is evidence of where the original label was fitted, as illustrated in picture 23. The original brass hanging chain is also still present at the neck, which is an excellent detail, as these are often broken or missing.Please note that this jacket has been professionally cleaned and restored. Each zip has also been refurbished to its original brass finish, lubricated, and runs perfectly.This jacket is one of the best examples of the original WW2 RAF Irvins you will find online. A very rare early war jacket which would suit a Battle for France or Battle of Britain collector very well!The jacket will suit a 36" chest well and a tighter fit on a 38" chest.Please note the measurements with the jacket laid flat to assist: Across the chest: 21.5" Underarm to hem of cuff: 21" From the top of the shoulder seam down to the hem of the cuff: 24.5" Across the shoulders: 20" Length down the back: 24"
