Description: A handsome finished pencil sketch of a Venetian scene from American illustrator and painter, Vernon Howe Bailey (1874-1953). This original pencil drawing depicts a lazy afternoon at the fountain in Campo San Boldo, at the center of the city of Venice. The bridge in the background is the Ponte San Boldo crossing the canal, Rio San Boldo, see the last photo in the gallery for a view of this place in the present day. This drawing was likely executed before 1910 when Bailey was illustrating European scenes for Harper's Magazine. It is a nice sized sketch measuring approx. 12 3/4 x 20 inches, it is signed in the lower right and also titled. It is executed on thick smooth wove paper with mild age toning , there is a flattened diagonal hard crease in the upper left and some surface grime, otherwise it is in fine condition. Vernon Howe Bailey (1874-1953) studied art at the Pennsylvania Museum School and the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts. Early on, he was employed as an artist for the Philadelphia Times and the Boston Herald before spending several years in Europe living, studying and working as an illustrator for American magazines. Bailey led an interesting life and has a detailed biography on his wikipedia page: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vernon_Howe_Bailey
