Description: This is a wonderful mid to late 1830s afternoon dress. It is made of semi-sheer white muslin lined at the bodice sides and back, but not the front. The front panels are cut on the bias and the bodice is piped at the neckline, shoulder seams, center front seam, armholes and side seams. The curved back seams are imitated with narrow cotton twill. Similar twill edges the sleeve ruffles. There is an embroidered tucker gathered into the neckline. I threaded a narrow silk ribbon through it, but it looks quite pretty without anything at all. The sleeve lining is loose, possibly to attach full lower sleeves which are not present. The skirt is gathered into the waistband and has a wonderful pocket slit behind the right side. It has a deep hem with exquisite tiny hand stitches- this dress has wonderful hand-sewing throughout. The skirt also has a loose lining like the sleeves. Attached to this has been added later a deep flounce with Valenciennes lace. It was added with machine stitching- the only machine stitching to be found in the dress. I have left it in place. The ruffle accent on the skirt has an amazing sewing technique underneath wherein it was gathered, attached and finished off all with the same stitches! Stunning! *Condition: Structurally sturdy with some small holes and repairs. Some replacement hooks and loose stitching. Very suitable for study and display. Not wearable. Look at photos carefully. * Measurements are provided for display only. 33" chest, 25" waist. These are approximate. *Please ask all questions before bidding- Thank you!
