Description: FYI - "zipsdm" are watermarks to protect the photo from digital piracy and not printed onto the actual photograph One-of-a-kind original photograph of soldiers likely marching to serve in the Spanish-American or Philippine-American War, 1898-1899. Doubt this a return home march due to the soldiers' solemn faces and that they are carrying their knapsacks. I unfortunately couldn't find where this photograph was taken or the infantry unit marching. I did a lot of research trying to match the architectural features in the background in many of the known military staging grounds in the US - San Francisco, New Orleans, Mobile, etc. The photograph was found in Iowa but research of the 51st Iowa Volunteer Infantry didn't yield a relationship. Also, scoured the infantry units involved in those wars in states nearby Iowa and still came up empty. It'd a pretty good quality photograph soi If you magnify the images, you can see some details. Some of the men are wearing cross shaped medals. I was thinking these could be related to the Kansas 20th Infantry's State issued medal but not sure if those soldiers had time to go home from the Spanish war, get their medal and then enter the Philippine war. May soldier volunteered for the Spanish war and instead found themselves in the Philippines war. Anyways, if someone recognizes the background buildings, please let me know or make the purchase and keep investigating. This is a smaller photo - 4-1/4" x 3-1/3" with the picture being within a 2-3/8" diameter circle. The material is quite thin but only has a slight arch. The back is blank but does have some darker marks. Condition very good - the camera used must have been one of the better cameras available because many cameras from this period didn't have very fast shutter speeds so moving objects tended to blur, but no blurring at all. No tears or creases - just some very light marks.
