Description: The Oregon Hospital for the Insane was constructed in Portland by medical doctors. Launched in 1859 as Oregon Hospital, the facility later came to specialize in the treatment of mental illness and was the defacto insane asylum for Oregon.MARY BANZER was committed to the hospital on February 23, 1883, for being unfit to be at large. It appears as though her husband or son swore to Banzer’s insanity. Supposed cause of the “disease overwork after confinement.” The scant reasoning for the commitment underscores the ease with which people were sometimes committed in the 19th and on into the 20 centuries in America. Judge Loyal B. Stearns signed the commitment. Banzer died on March 7, 1891, and is buried in Saint Barbara’s Catholic (Salem) Cemetery, Marion County, Oregon.Toning with some edge fold splits.Everything we sell is guaranteed authentic forever to the original buyer.
