Description: ONE Large Musket Flint. These are very good condition large musket flint recovered from the 1805 wreck of the East India Company ship The Earl of Abergaveny. The flints would have been used in the EIC Brown Bess muskets. The recovered flints were part of the ships cargo and come with a brief history of the ship wreck. See PHOTO'S. The Musket Flints vary in size but all are approx:1 1/4" - 1 5/8" x 1" - 1 1/4" ( 3.0 - 3.5 cm x 3.0 - 3.5 cm. ). You are bidding on ONE FLINT and the flint received will be taken at random from one of those shown in the photo's. Please note that as the flints are all hand knapped they are individual and unique with variations in shape and colour. These are shipwreck recovered flints individually picked up from the sea floor. These ones are in very good condition for picked up flints but the one received may have very small edge chips/damage or some crustation from being on the sea bed for over 200 years, see photo's.It is many years since divers recovered these flints from the wreck site and these are now becoming rare to find on the open market as most UK wreck sites are now protected with finds not allowed to be sold. (Gun Flints were not held directly in the iron jaws of the hammer, but were first wrapped round with a leather or thin lead piece which gripped both the flint and the iron jaws).
