BRADLEY - PHOTOGRAPH MOUNT SIGNED 05/08/1970 CO-SIGNED BY: GENERAL MAXWELL D. TAYLOR, GENERAL LYMAN L. LEMNITZER, GENERAL J. LAWTON COLLINS, GENERAL WILLIAM C. WESTMORELAND - HFSID 277547 GENERAL OMAR N. BRADLEY CO-SIGNED BY: GENERAL WILLIAM C. WESTMORELAND, GENERAL MAXWELL D. TAYLOR, GENERAL LYMAN L. LEMNITZER, GENERAL J. LAWTON COLLINS This rare color photograph, mounted on off-white posterboard, is of five World War II generals, two of them in uniform. All five were Army Chiefs of Staff, and three (Bradley, Collins and Lemnitzer) were Chairmen of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. It's signed by all five generals. Photograph signed "Omar N. Bradley", "J Lawton Collins", "Maxwell D Taylor," "L.L. Lemnitzer" and "W.C.Westmoreland". Also signed "Five Army Chiefs of Staff/Army War College/May 8 ,1970" in unknown hand. Color, 9½x7½ photo mounted on 11¾x11¾ off-white posterboard. Signatures on posterboard. This rare photograph includes five generals who helped lead the United States to victory in World War II. All five were also Army Chiefs of Staff, and three (Bradley, Collins and Lemnitzer) were Chairmen of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. WESTMORELAND (1914-2005), a veteran of World War II, was Superintendent of the U.S. Military Academy at West Point (1960-1963) and Commander of the U.S. Military Assistance Command, Vietnam, and United States Army, Vietnam, at the peak of the Vietnam War (1964-1968). Westmoreland, who then served as Army Chief of Staff (1968-1972), supervised the Army's disengagement from Vietnam and the transition from the draft to an all-volunteer Army. BRADLEY (1893-1981) commanded of the U.S. First Army, which landed at Utah and Omaha beaches, Normandy, on D-Day, June 6, 1944. In August 1944, he became the Commander of the 12th Army Group, the largest force ever commanded on the field. On September 20, 1950, Bradley was promoted to Five-Star General of the Army, and would be the last surviving general of 5-star rank. Lacking the arrogance and ostentation of some other generals, Bradley became known as "the soldier's general." In 1942, General COLLINS (1896-1987), as Commander of the 25th Infantry Division, landed as a relief force on Guadalcanal. Collins, who had previously been part of General Omar Bradley's First Army in the Normandy assault as Commander of the VII Corps that spearheaded the breakout at St. L in July 1944, later served as Chief of Staff of the Army (1949-1953). TAYLOR (1901-1987) accompanied the 82nd Airborne Division in World War II to North Africa, landing in Sicily. He commanded the 101st Airborne Division that dropped into Normandy behind Utah Beach on D-Day, June 6, 1944. Taylor served as Chief of Staff of the Army (1955-1959). He was later named Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff (1962-1964). Army General LEMNITZER (1899-1988) helped plan the North Africa and Sicily invasions as a key aide to General Eisenower during World War II. He was Army Chief of Staff from 1957 and JCS Chairman (1960-1962). An advocate of a direct US invasion of Castro's Cuba, he was not reappointed JCS Chairman when his term expired, but he moved to another vitally important post: Supreme Allied Commander of NATO. Lightly toned. Photograph has small cut near bottom edge and small stains and is chipped on top, bottom and left edge. Parts of signatures are faded but legible. "W.C" in Westmoreland's signature and "d" in Bradley's signature are lightly smeared. Otherwise in fine condition. See more material from these signers: GENERAL OMAR N. BRADLEY GENERAL WILLIAM C.
