Kokeshi made in Gunma is differentiated from dento ("traditional") produced in the Tohoku district in northeastern Honshu. Modern kokeshi is characterized by freedom from the conventional shapes of kokeshi with round head. Modern kokeshi are often shaped as little girls with plump round body and bobbed hair or other non-traditional forms. Kokeshi art is admired for its authentic character and creative designs and has many passionate collectors in Japan and around the world. #51
