Description: American Impressionist oil on New York City canvas board depicting a Japanese garden. Signed and dated lower right, "Jack Weno" (?) and "1939". Comes in it's original red bamboo motif carved picture frame. Painting measures 16 1/8 x 9 7/8 inches. Measures approx. 17 3/4 x 11 5/8 overall with the frame. Canvasboard marked verso "N.Y. Central Supply Co.". The painting is in untouched, uncleaned, unrestored condition. This oil painting is a nice example of Japonisme in impressionistic art, and with terrific impasto brushwork. Famous artists of the Japonisme genre included Claude Monet and Vincent van Gogh. The British impressionist Percy W. Gibbs and American Impressionists like Lillian Genth and John Singer Sargent also liked to portray such Japanese inspired subject matter. The most famous of all might be James McNeill Whistler. I'm unsure if I'm reading the artist's name correctly. If it's "Weno", I found a John Weno who was French, born in Alsace in 1818. He had a son, also named John, who lived here in the USA. In this work, we have two pretty ladies in the Japanese garden. One is holding a wagasa (parasol) and to her left is a paper lantern. They both wear a kimono. Japonisme in western art started in the 1800's and continued until ca. 1950 at the latest. The art scene changed per the modern and abstract era that took hold by the 1950's. Also, World War II and Pearl Harbor happened. The painting offered here is from a bygone time and that's one thing I love about it (!).
