Description: This auction is for a 78 rpm shellac record featuring Dick Jurgens and his Orchestra. This record was produced by OKeh Records and released in 1941. The A-side plays "Elmer's Tune" while the B-side plays "You're the Sunshine of My Heart". Elmer Albrecht, who originally composed Elmer's Tune in the early 1920's (at the time untitled and without lyrics), approached Dick Jurgens with the song in February, 1941. Jurgens agreed to write an arrangement for his orchestra. A short time later, while preparing to perform the song for a radio broadcast, the radio announcer asked Jurgens what the title of the song was. He casually said, "Elmer's Tune", and the name stuck. On April 10, 1941, this song was recorded for the first time which is the recording contained on this 78 record. This version reached #8 on the Billboard Best Selling Retail Records chart in October, 1941. The popularity of the tune prompted Glenn Miller to ask Jurgens if he could record a vocal version of the song. The song's publisher hired Sammy Gallop to write the lyrics. Miller recorded his version of the song for RCA on August 11, 1941, with Ray Eberle on lead vocals. This version was an even bigger success than Jurgens' recording, peaking at #1 for one week on the Billboard chart for the week ending December 13, 1941, in a 20-week chart run. All of this is the reason for this record to have the song's author listed as Albrecht alone. In later recordings, the composers are listed as Albrecht-Gallop-Jurgens. This record, which plays very well, measures 10" in diameter and is in very good condition. If you have any questions, please contact me before purchasing. Thank you.
