Description: • For your consideration: • A First-Edition UK Hardcover (SCARCE) of: • “OBJECTIONS TO HUMANISM”(Constable & Co., 1963) (Hardcover, First Edition) • EDITED BY H. J. BLACKHAM • “This is an intensely important book. Any thinking Christian who reads it will be better able to face himself, the world, and God.” —WILLIAM BARCLAY • “Following the publication of OBJECTIONS TO CHRISTIAN BELIEF, one reviewer wrote: ‘The obvious next step…would be for a group of intellectual non-believers to write with equal harshness about the contradictions or inadequacies of their own beliefs.’ “Four leading humanists here take up that challenge. Just as Christianity was put in the dock by Christians, now humanism is examined by humanists in the same spirit of ruthless self-analysis. Indeed, this is probably the first time that humanists have ever been openly self-critical. “The editor, Director of the newly formed British Humanist Association, introduces this volume by stating what the essentials of humanism are. PROFESSOR HEPBURN criticizes attempts of humanists to reconstruct humanism on a religious basis. KATHELEEN NOTT deals with the aridity of mere rationalism. KINGSLEY MARTIN with the rejection of Utopianism and disenchantment with the ideas of progress. The editor’s concluding essay faces what must, for most people, be the most emotional objection to humanism—‘the pointlessness of it all’ if humanists are right. “Anyone set thinking by the present [controversies about religious faith]…will find this a stimulating and authoritative introduction to a way of thinking which has a long tradition and a growing influence.” —THE PUBLISHER • “A book which suggests a whole new area of discussion between Christians and non-believers….an extraordinary thorough attack on large areas of what is normally considered to be Christian belief…. The aim of these extraordinary enough—nothing less than to state as eloquently as they can the bulk of the modern case against Christian belief and practice. On the whole, they do this with a vigour which might almost suggest flagellation, if it were not for the robust and healthy good sense of their general tone.” —PHILIP TOWNBEE • “Likely to remain a source book of the New Theology.” —TWENTIETH CENTURY • “A book that leaves the effect of a moral and intellectual spring-clean…the work of Christians deliberately exposing themselves, because they love what they; trust and trust what they love.” —THE BISHOP OF WOOLWICH • CONTENT: • H. J. BLACKHAM — “Humanism: The Subject of the Objections” (“H.J. BLACKHAM is Director of the newly formed British Humanist Association and Secretary of The Ethical Union.”) • RONALD HEPBURN — “A Critique of Humanist Theology” (“RONALD HEPBURN is Professor of Philosophy at the University of Nottingham.”) • KATHLEEN NOTT — “Is Rationalism Sterile?” (“KATHLEEN NOTT, poetess, novelist, and philosophic literary critic is a frequent contributor to THE OBSERVER.”) • KINGLSEY MARTIN — “Is Humanism Utopian?” (“KINGLSEY MARTIN was Editor at THE NEW STATESMAN from 1931-1960 and is now Editorial Director of the same paper.”) • H. J. BLACKHAM — “The Pointlessness of It All” •• For details, please see below.• TITLE: “OJBECTIONS TO HUMANISM” EDITOR: H. J.
