Description: This photo is a digital reproduction of a vintage photograph from 1911 of a New York Central Railroad policeman escorting a steam engine locomotive train downtown, as was required by New York City law. These NY Central Railroad policemen were known as the "Eleventh Avenue Cowboys". It was taken on 11th Avenue south of 14th Street, known as the New York Central Meat Packing district in Manhattan, at the western edge of Greenwich Village. Note the incredible details in the background: The Uneeda Biscuit Company building (now Nabisco) between 15th & 16th Streets from 10th to 11th Avenues, which now houses Chelsea Market, and the G. H. Hammond Meat Packing plant is at the right foreground. What a cool photo of this bygone era in New York City's history! It is approximately 8" x 10", printed on genuine Kodak paper & ready for framing. It would make a great gift for someone into NYC history, railroadiana, and/or a police buff / collector...or even for yourself :-) The photo was scanned through a plastic sleeve with "SAMPLE" written over it so the photo quality is better in person. Bear in mind that photo quality from the early 1900s does not compare with today's photo quality.
