The 5 kroner was issued for the 100-year anniversary of the polar ship Fram and Fritjof Nansen returning safely to Norway in 1896. A crew of 12 and supplies for 5 years of sailing, the Fram ship left Norway in July 1893 and followed the Northwest Passage to deliberately get stuck in the ice drifting towards the North Pole. In March 1895, Fritjof Nansen and Hjalmar Johansen left the ship to attempt reaching the North Pole on skis.
