Description: Unusual small map of North America by Nicolas SANSON D'ABBEVILLE (1600-1667), titled: "AMERICA SETTENTRIONAL de N. Sanson di Abbeville Geografo Ordinario del Re". California is represented as an island with an indented northern coastline which is labeled "Nuovo Albion". California is depicted as an island, an error made at first by the mapmakers of England and Netherlands beginning in 1624. The fact that he depicted California as an island used to perpetuate this myth on European maps until the end of the 18th century. The eastern part of North America is named "Nuovo Messico". The Great Lakes cover most of Nuova Francia and are open-ended in the west. There is the two names "New Amsterdam" and "N. York". This unusual map is not listed in Burden, McLaughlin or any other of the North American references we consulted. Nicolas Sanson d'Abbeville was one of the first geograph to realise a double hemisphere map. Born in Abbeville, active from 1627, Nicolas Sanson d'Abbeville was to bring about the rise of French cartography, although the fierce competition of the Dutch would last until the end of the century. His success was partly owing to the partnership with the publisher Pierre Mariette. In 1644 the latter had purchased the business of Melchior Tavernier, and helped Sanson with financial support in producing the maps. In 1657 Pierre Mariette died, however his son, also named Pierre, co-published Les Cartes Générales de toutes les parties du Monde the following year. It was the first folio French produced world atlas. Edition: Italian edition, c. 1730, 18th Century.Size with margins : 21,2 x 20 cm / 8,2 x 7,8 inchesCondition : good condition, in colors.
