A scarce copy of this history and chronicle of the 59th Illinois Volunteer Infantry during the Civil War, covering action in the following nine campaigns 1) Fremont in Missouri, 2) Curtis in Missouri and Arkansas, 3) Halleck's Siege of Corinth, 4) Buell in Kentucky, 5) Rosecrans in Kentucky and Tennessee, 6) Grant at the Battle of Chattanooga, 7) Sherman from Chattanooga to Atlanta, 8) Thomas in Tennessee and North Carolina, and 9) Stanley in Texas. Covers engagement in the following battles: Pea Ridge, Perryville, Stone's River, Lookout Mountain, Resaca, Kennesaw Mountain, Jonesboro, Franklin, Nashville, and the Siege of Atlanta. Includes a regimental roster, as well as an addendum, including articles on the 37th Illinois Infantry, the 5th Wisconsin Battery, the Mississippi Ram Fleet, and Negro Soldiers in the Army of the Cumberland, and 27 pages of biographies. The author, George Washington Herr (1844-1930), was a native of Pennsylvania who had moved to Illinois with his family as a young child. He mustered out of Company C, 59th Illinois Infantry, on December 8, 1865, after serving four years and four months with the company. He then moved to Sacramento in 1870, where he lived out the rest of his days. He was also past commander of the Grand Army of the Republic of California and Nevada.
