"The nephew and grandson of military composers, [Dostal] studied at the church music department of the Vienna Music Academy in Klosterneuburg. He then worked as a theatre composer, arranger and orchestrator in Innsbruck, Salzburg and Berlin until in 1933 he had his first operetta success with Clivia. He also wrote for film. In 1943 he left Berlin and in 1946 returned to Austria.
