Description: DESCRIPTION: Nicario Jimenez (also known as Nicario Jimenez Quispe - Peruvian, b. 1957). Mixed media sculpture, late 20th century. Signed on the verso. A beautiful three-dimensional retablo by Andean artist Nicario Jimenez. The exterior of this two door wooden retablo topped by a pediment crest is embellished with a hand-painted floral motif. Open the doors and a lively scene awaits! Brightly colored figurines participate in leading Jesus through the street, waving palms, on Palm Sunday. Nicario has a personal connection to his art form, as he was born in a peasant community of the high Andes and is a third generation retablo artist. He skillfully carves and models each figure from a blend of boiled potato and gypsum powder and then hand-paints them. Jimenez pays homage to this cultural tradition in which an ensemble of figures, animals, and plants come together to tell a story from the rituals and daily lives of his people. Approximate Size (when open): 2" deep x 10-3/4 across the front x 5-1/2” high to top of roof Approximate Size (when closed): 5-1/8" across the front x 2” deep x 5-1/2" high to top point of roof. CONDITION: Fair condition. Hinges appear to be made of leather and are loose. Hinges may have been repaired. Age wear and minor scuffs to the finish. Figures appear to be in very good condition. I have not noted any breaks or loose figures. Some palms may be missing. “Ramos” is written on the bottom in pencil. Needs to be cleaned — due to the fragility of this piece, I did not attempt to clean. Presents with wonderful imagery and artistry. Questions? Please don’t hesitate to ask. I’m happy to send any additional photos at your request. Thanks for looking!
